Arsenal’s Pelova suffers ACL injury

Arsenal’s Victoria Pelova became the latest women’s player to suffer an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture after the midfielder was hurt on international duty with the Netherlands, the Women’s Super League club said on Wednesday.

“Victoria was substituted after her knee extended in the 12th minute of the Netherlands’ UEFA Women’s Championship qualifier in Tampere, Finland, and subsequently underwent testing to determine the extent of the injury,” Arsenal said in a statement.

“She will undergo surgery in due course and will be sidelined for an extended period.”

England duo Beth Mead and Leah Williamson, Dutchwoman Vivianne Miedema and Canadian Janine Beckie all missed the 2023 Women’s World Cup due to ACL injuries.

In April, FIFPRO, the Professional Footballers’ Association, Nike and Leeds Beckett University announced a three-year project titled “Project ACL”, which will conduct research into ACL tears.
