‘Heeramandi’ director Sanjay Leela Bhansali says he received overwhelming support from Pakistani audiences

Acclaimed filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali has made headlines with his latest venture, ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’, a recently released series that explores the lives of Muslim characters in Lahore.In a recent interview with IndieWire, Bhansali discussed his decision to tell this story, emphasizing his belief in the unity between India and Pakistan.
Bhansali expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he received from Pakistani audiences, highlighting the show’s ability to bring people together despite political tensions. “It’s a piece that somehow brings us all together; when all of India was one, it was undivided,” he mentioned. “These people belong to us as much as they belong to them.”
Despite the sensitive nature of the subject matter, Bhansali revealed that he encountered no significant negative response while creating 'The Constitution'. The absence of non-Muslim or Sikh characters of note did not deter him, as he believes in the universal appeal of his work. “There are things in the characters that connect to people in my work,” he explained. “That is why they talk about it.”
‘Heeramandi’ premiered on May 1 to much anticipation, boasting a star-studded cast including Manisha Koirala, Aditi Rao HydariSharmin Segal, Taha Shah Badussha, Shekhar Sumanand Adhyayan Suman.
