Despite portraying a villain on screen, Park Sung Hoon’s off-screen persona couldn’t be more different, charming fans with his adorable and sweet nature. However, not everyone could separate the actor from his role, leading to a wave of criticism directed at Park Sung Hoon himself.
During public appearances, Park Sung Hoon found himself at the receiving end of viewers’ frustrations, with some expressing their anger towards his character directly to him. During his appearance on ‘You Quiz on the Block’, Park Sung Hoon shared a particularly memorable incident from a restaurant visit. He recalled a woman approaching him and physically hitting his back, urging him to spare the main characters of ‘Queen of Tears’.
In an interview with JoyNews24, Park Sung Hoon revealed the extent of the hate he received, including numerous direct messages on social media. The overwhelming negativity even led him to take a break from social media. However, there is a Korean proverb that suggests the more hate or criticism (known as ‘yok’) one endures, the longer their life will be.
He shared, “I got so much hate for the role, enough to last me a lifetime. I couldn’t even check my DMs for a while because of all the angry messages that came through. But I’m not actually like that. I’m glad many people loved the show and had so much affection for the Hae In x Hyun Woo couple. It’s been a great deal of joy seeing the support”, as reported by koreaboo. Park Sung Hoon chose to adopt a positive perspective towards the criticism he received. Speaking to The Korea Times, he explained his mindset regarding the hateful messages he encountered. Rather than being disheartened by them, he views the criticism as a form of compliment, seeing it as evidence that he successfully portrayed his character.
He elaborated, stating, “I’m actually not bothered or hurt by those direct messages (on social media) … Because they root for Hong and Baek, they have such feelings toward (my character). That’s how much they love and put interest in our series so I enjoy reading the comments. Now I think perspectives have changed. Previously, people used to see the character as the actor’s real personality, but now, more people see it separately. So I try to think of it as compliments that I portrayed my character convincingly”.
Park Sung Hoon, reflecting on his future projects, expressed excitement about his upcoming role in the second season of popular Korean thriller series ‘Squid Game’. He eagerly anticipates the opportunity to be associated with his character’s name in the new series, stating, “I’ve been called Jae-jun then Eun-seoung. So next, I hope I can be called by the character’s name from ‘Squid Game’”. Fans can expect the premiere of ‘Squid Game 2’ later this year.
