Time and time again, I find myself running away from exercise

[ad_1]

I see I’ve used up three paragraphs, during which I was supposed to start exercising. But first I must make a cup of tea. Tea, first thing in the morning, has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. And then there’s the cup I make for Jocasta (whose knees, should you be wondering, are fine). And, of course, a morning cup of tea must be accompanied by a perusal of The Sydney Morning Herald.

I sip my tea – Dilmah is the best supermarket brand, in my considered opinion, but we don’t need to waste time with an argument over my choice of tea. Not when there are exercises to be done, probably within the next five paragraphs, possibly sooner.

First, I read Gittins and Hartcher. McClymont, of course. Then Wilcox, who leaves me both amused and moved. In truth, Wilcox leaves me a little teary, which is weird for a cartoonist. I might need a second cup of tea. I check with Jocasta, who is also sobbing over the Wilcox, and she wants one, too.

Bugger. The tea caddy is empty. I fetch another pack, then grab some scissors to open the foil pack. I start making more tea. I also tear up the empty cardboard packet because Costa Georgiadis says you should always add cardboard to your compost, and this is the easiest way of achieving that result.

I should mention that I’ve met Costa quite a few times and he really is the most amazing human. I could tell you more, but time is of the essence. I don’t want to waste time chatting, as it might delay the exercises.

Back to bed. More Herald. More tea. Our dog Clancy loves being at the park early, when there are many other dogs. In the dog park, peak time is 7.30am. Party time. He flashes me a look with those lovely eyes of his. It would be unfair to Clancy to deny him a trip to the park. The trip will only take 30 minutes. Then I’ll be home doing my exercises. No knee operation for me!

It turns out the 30-minute trip to the park was an aspirational notion. Jocasta is part of our expedition. Jocasta stops and talks to everyone in the park. I stand to one side, like a sullen teenager, as she engages with other human beings. Some of them are strangers! Jocasta appears fascinated by every detail of their lives. Even Clancy looks bored.

Anyway, after a million hours of “healthy social engagement” we arrive home. It’s now 9am. I don’t need to leave for work until 10am, so that’s a whole hour for my exercises.

Then, a thought strikes: I should take a shower first. I’d feel great after a shower! So I have a shower. I also shave, of course. Then I notice my boots are dirty, so I clean them.

Oh, and my daughter-in-law has shared a beautiful picture of my six-month-old grandson, who I want to name Sweetpea, because he’s such a sweet pea, so I must take a moment to “like” and repost his beauty.

There is so much to do. So much to enjoy. So much life to live. Now, it’s 10am, and work beckons. I’ve run out of time. And, I notice, I’ve run out of paragraphs.

On the bright side, there’s always tomorrow.
