Kelly Rowland clashes with an usher
The former Destiny’s Child member was reportedly told by an usher to “get off” the red carpet before the premiere of Marcello Mio earlier this week. In a video of the incident, multiple ushers gathered around Rowland seem to shepherd her up the stairs and into the theatre, causing the actress to forcefully address one of them.
Speaking to the Associated PressRowland said she had stood her ground. “I have a boundary and I stand by those boundaries and that is it … There were other women that attended that carpet who did not quite look like me, and they didn’t get scolded, or pushed off, or told to get off. I stood my ground and she felt like she had to stand hers. But I stood my ground.”
The Cannes red carpet is known for its relatively strict policies, which includes disallowing celebrities from taking selfies or using their cameras. They are also generally not encouraged to linger.
Was Cate Blanchett making a statement?
Blanchett has become a mainstay on the Cannes red carpet. This year, she attended as part of the cast of the satirical comedy Rumoursbut it was her look for the premiere of The Apprentice that had people talking on social media.
The actress wore a dress from Haider Ackermann’s spring 2023 couture collection for Jean Paul Gaultier, which at first glance appeared to be a rather simple black gown with pearls across her shoulders. However, the interior lining of the dress was green, with the back of the dress a very pale pink, which photographed close to white.
Some people speculated that the combination of her dress and the red carpet resembled the black, green, white and red Palestinian flag, thereby potentially acting as a statement on the ongoing war in Gaza. Blanchett and her representatives have not commented on the speculation.
Bella’s back and she’s in Versace
Model Bella Hadid has been relatively MIA over the past year, skipping major fashion events like the Met Gala. However, she made a splash at the premiere of Phew Lovewearing a gown from Versace’s spring/summer 2001 couture collection. The sheer black dress cinched at the waist and was paired with Chopard diamond earrings.
She showed off a few other archival looks at the festival, including a red and white keffiyeh dress by Michael and Hushioriginally from 2001, and a Dsquared2 gown from the fall/winter 2006 collection.
Not just a black tie affair
Cannes is often an excuse for a slightly more casual, summery look – the celebrities are in the French Riviera, after all. Some of the suits displayed over the two weeks, particularly daytime looks, were a refreshing departure from the overdone black tux that dominated recent events like the Met Gala and Oscars.
Actor and model Alton Mason showed off a cinched suit form French menswear designer LGN Louis Gabriel Nouchiat while attending the Megalopolis screening. Meanwhile, Kevin Costner wore an all-white suit, paired with a medallion and tan shoes, and Joe Alwyn championed a casual cream and black pin-striped ensemble.
Greta Gerwig is in her hoof era
The acclaimed Barbie director was the jury president for this year’s festival, so she had to pull out all the stops when it came to her wardrobe. By Friday, she had already worn around nine different looks, including a blue and white striped Maison Margiela dress from the spring/summer 2024 couture collection, a custom Merlot Saint Laurent gown, and a light pink and feathered custom Gucci dress, which was definitely giving “director Barbie”.
However, the most eye-catching choice were arguably her white hoofed heels, worn at the jury photo call before the opening ceremony. She isn’t the first to channel horse, as singer Lana Del Rey wore similar-style boots at the Met Gala earlier this month.
The best of the red carpet
There were plenty of stunning looks on the red carpet at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Here are some of the highlights.
