‘Heeramandi’ actor Jayati Bhatia recalls Richa Chadha’s tears in the infamous 99-take incident | Hindi Movie News

Jayati Bhatia recounted a tense moment from the set of ‘The Constitution: The Diamond Bazaar,’ where her co-star Richa Chadha found herself in distress after director Sanjay Leela Bhansali expressed dissatisfaction with her performance. Jayati revealed that Richa was in tears due to Bhansali’s criticism, causing a disruption that led to the cancellation of Jayati’s shoot the following day.Richa had previously disclosed undergoing extensive retakes, totaling 99, for a shot that ultimately didn’t make it into the final cut, shedding light on the challenges faced by actors in the filmmaking process.
In a conversation with Bollywood Now, Jayati was questioned about her interactions with Richa, who portrayed the tragic character Lajjo on the show. Reflecting on their limited encounters, Jayati mentioned that she only met Richa a couple of times on set, during the ‘Sakal Ban’ song shoot and later for her death scene. Jayati was informed that Richa would only appear in two episodes, so she wasn’t fully aware of her character. Although they discussed Lajjo’s portrayal in scenes, they weren’t aware of the depth of her vulnerability.
Jayati further said that she had heard of the infamous 99 takes, and the only reason she’d heard about the incident was that her shoot was cancelled the next day. She asked why, and she was told, ‘Something major happened yesterday. Sir took 101 takes with Richa; he wouldn’t stop. Richa was very upset; she was crying’.
Set against the backdrop of the Indian independence revolution, ‘Heeramandi’ delves into the conflict between the courtesans of Lahore’s red-light district and British Raj officials. The series features a stellar cast, including Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao HydariRicha Chadha, Fardeen Khan, Taha Shah Badussha, shekhar sumanand Adhyayan Suman, who portray various characters in this gripping narrative.
