The Oscar winner, in his latest interview, hinted at his rumoured return as the superhero Iron Man. In conversation with Esquire, RDJ, seemingly doesn’t rule out a possible return as his famed character.
During the conversation, Robert shared that he would “happily” return to the MCU, saying, “It’s too integral a part of my DNA.”
“That role chose me.And look, I always say, ‘Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige.’ It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.”
However, Downey’s sentiments about his return seem to have changed over time. It was only a few months ago that he remarked about ‘moving on’ from the role. He also admitted feeling that the novelty of portraying Tony Stark had worn off. He reflected, “I will never be as cool as Tony Stark, but it was so great to be associated with someone like that for a while, and then it wore off.” Despite this, Downey’s recent comments suggest a potential change of heart.
Robert kickstarted his role in the MCU with his iconic performance in 2008’s ‘Iron Man’ and concluded his run with 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame‘. The film which marked his last official appearance as the superhero, saw his character meet a tragic end while going up against the mad Titan, Thanos. Since then, fans have been eager for any indication of his possible return to the superhero genre, now that the MCU is in the Multiverse Saga and is seeing several actors returning as their iconic characters. The upcoming Deadpool film sees a bunch of actors from Hugh Jackman to Jennifer Garner returning to play their famed characters Wolverine and Electra, respectively.
Following his departure from the MCU, Downey Jr. took up a range of film roles, including Christopher Nolan‘s ‘Oppenheimer’, which earned him his first Academy Award for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss.
