Imtiaz Ali disclosed that Amar Singh Chamkila‘s song ‘Vida Karo‘ was composed by AR Rahman and Irshad Kamil at 2:30 am by candlelight. By the time the song was completed, those in the studio were in tears.
Imtiaz recounted how Rahman joined them at 2:30 am in the studio as they were preparing to leave. Rahman suggested dimming the lights and lighting candles for a more enjoyable ambiance.As he played the tune, they discussed old Hindi film songs, including music from Guru Dutt films. Imtiaz was simply immersed in the music as an audience member.

Irshad quickly penned the lines in just 45 minutes. Rahman then suggested composing the song on the spot. As they worked, some individuals in the studio became emotional. Rahman humorously remarked to Irshad, “What have you done, Irshad Kamil? You’re making people cry.”

‘Vida Karo’ serves as a farewell to the characters of Chamkila (Diljit Dosanjh) and Amarjot (Parineeti Chopra), who met their tragic end due to their music amidst years of prejudice and judgment. The song, penned by Kamil and inspired by a poem by Shiv Kumar Batalvisees Chamkila accepting his fate while confronting bias.

The filmmaker also touched upon the decision to have Arijit sing the song, noting that Rahman put forward his name. According to him, having a composer sing their own composition brings a unique depth and connection. He emphasized the importance of a singer who can deliver the melody with sincerity, praising Arijit for his authentic and unadulterated singing style.

Imtiaz also expressed his admiration for Arijit’s singing style, highlighting his ability to sing an entire song without relying on techniques like auto-tune or artificial intelligence. He commended Arijit for his genuine and sincere approach to singing, which adds authenticity to the music.
