Each year, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour appoints a number of celebrities to act as her co-chairs of the Met Gala, based on who is trending – fashionably, culturally, or in the sporting arena – at the time.
The co-chairs are ambassadors for the event but also play a hands-on role in deciding the theme, guest list and decorations – all of which is signed off by Wintour.
For 2024, there are four co-chairs, including Australian-born actor Chris Hemsworthwho joins Nicole Kidman (2003, 2005) and Cate Blanchett (2007) on the small list of Aussies who’ve had the honour.
This year’s group also includes Challengers star Zendayarapper Bad Bunny and singer-actress Jennifer Lopez.
You may be wondering, “Why these four?” Well, aside from being one of the major cultural and fashion events of the year, the Met Gala is a fundraiser for the Met museum’s costume institute, so it’s ideal if the event can reach new audiences. Cue Hemsworth’s 59 million Instagram followers, and that may give you a clue. Surprisingly, this is his first time attending the gala, so to be elevated straight to co-chair is quite a feat. By comparison, J.Lo has attended 13 Met Galas since 2004.
