Veteran actress Shabana Azmi has graced the entertainment industry for an impressive five decades. Her illustrious career is set to be honored at the New York Indian Film Festivalcommemorating the 50-year cinematic journey. In a recent interview, Shabana talked about the evolving role of women within the industry, as well as the increase in women-led movies.She took Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt as perfect examples for justifying the statement.
While talking to Mid-Day, Shabana stated that it was only parallel cinema that gave women substantial roles. She acknowledged the gradual growth in the industry towards casting women and making women-led cinema. Shabana talked about the roles that Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone had been doing for the past few years. She wishes for a significant change in mainstream cinema. There are many women writers who can bring changes in the industry, and it is a good sign.

While addressing the pay disparity in the industry, she emphasized that actors these days should be ready to play supporting roles in women-led cinema to compensate for what all actresses did all these years. If a female-centric movie can win at the box office, then the pay disparity would be diminishing to a great extent.

Shabana won five National Film Awards for Best Actress, and she was honored with the Padma Shri in 1998 and the Padma Bhushan in 2012. She debuted with Shyam Benegal’s ‘Ankur’ in 1974. The actress was last seen in ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani,’ starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh.
