His perseverance and passion to become an actor are significant as he is juggling between being a full-time Doctor and a committed actor. In an exclusive chat with ETimes, Ashish talked about the similarity between an actor and a doctor. He also added how it felt like working with Ajay and Madhavan in this film. Here are some excerpts from the interview.
How was your experience working with Ajay Devgn and R Madhavan?
The experience of working with R. Madhavan sir and Ajay Devgn sir was very beautiful and memorable. Both have treated me like their younger brother. And both are very calm and composed. I have learnt a lot from them, both of them. It was a very good learning session for me whenever I used to see them acting. I have worked with Ajay Devgn sir in Bhola. The experience was truly memorable.
What inspired you to pursue acting alongside your career as a doctor?
I was exposed to the stage at a very young age of 11. At that age, I played a double role which were completely contrasting characters: that of a saint and one of a dacoit. While performing, I realized that I wasn’t ‘Ashish Gokhale’ anymore and I had become those characters. The epiphany struck right there that this is what I would love doing for the rest of my existence. Though I was an adolescent, the dream to become an actor took root at that very moment. The fact that I could live through so many characters is what inspired me. The town I grew up in had no access to a cinema theatre. Whatever little access to movies I had was through television and Doordarshan in those days. It was theatre that brought out and refined the actor within me.
Are there any similarities between acting and practicing medicine that you have noticed?
The only similarity I have observed in acting and in practicing medicine is that most of the time you know the condition of the patient and the severity of the condition. And you have to convince them, this is what is happening inside your body. The reports are saying this. And you know this is serious. Then you take it as a challenge, ‘okay, I’ll cure this’. You have to convince that patient in some different and subtle language that don’t worry, you will be fine. But you know the severity. Otherwise, the patient will lose confidence. So sometimes many anxious patients come and you have to motivate them. You have to act a little funny to them. And sometimes you have to act as a shaitan against the viruses and bacteria. When you treat any patient very aggressively, any disease very aggressively, so you have to act as a shaitan against the viruses, of course. So that too very subtly. That’s the only similarity. Very subtly you have to convince the patient and treat the patient. Treat his body.
Salman Khan’s letter from ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ era sparks nostalgia online: ‘I hope that you will keep on loving me…’
What advice do you have for aspiring actors who also have another career?
The only advice I would like to give to all the youngsters is: please take your education seriously and make sure you have your basic education in place before you choose to come to Mumbai. Having a degree always helps. Yes, we all have dreams but to sustain those dreams, you have to have the courage to work hard and keep your dreams alive. Get the basic training in acting. Do theatre, learn to emote well. If your basics are taken care of, the sky’s the limit for you.
Do you have any upcoming projects in the world of acting?
I just finished ‘Raid 2’. And I have a few films lined up in the pipeline. I think one film will go on the floor in the month of June. I can’t reveal names about my co-actors in that film. But that is a Bollywood film again. I am practicing medicine every day. One is the continuous work of being a doctor. And as an actor, there are few films in the pipeline right now.
