Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani recently shared a personal anecdote during an event in Kolkata that shed light on the inspiration behind a famous scene from his film 3 Idiots.
Hirani spoke candidly about his journey and the pivotal moments that shaped his career. He revealed that the iconic confession scene in 3 Idiots, where R Madhavan‘s character expresses his desire to be a wildlife photographer to his father, was inspired by a real-life experience from his own life.
During the event, Hirani reminisced about his aspirations as a young man. Initially wanting to pursue engineering, he eventually followed his uncle’s advice and enrolled in Chartered Accountancy (CA) studies. However, Hirani soon realized that CA was not his true passion and bravely confessed his feelings to his father, mirroring the emotional conversation portrayed in 3 Idiots.

Rajkumar Hirani on working with Shah Rukh Khan in 'Dunki' and the 'debate' around it's box-office collections: 'The content of the film should be more than Paison'

Reflecting on this pivotal moment, Hirani shared, “The scene from 3 Idiots where R Madhavan tells his father he wants to be a wildlife photographer, that is one scene out of my life. I gathered the courage and told my father that CA was not my calling, and he asked me to join him. I can’t tell you the joy and relief I felt.”

Meanwhile, Hirani’s son Vir is set to make his acting debut with the play Letters from Suresh, an updated version of the iconic Tumhari Amrita, which had featured the late Farooq Sheikh and Shabana Azmi.
Letters from Suresh, as in the case of the original, is being directed by theatre veteran Feroze Abbas Khan. Vir Hirani is a recent graduate of the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, better known as RADA, in London. He has been making short films since his teens.
