The K-pop sensation BTS finds itself entangled in a new controversy as they become targets of a social media boycott amid a larger movement supporting Palestine. Dubbed the ‘Block Out’ campaign, this movement seeks to boycott popular artists who have chosen not to use their influential platforms to raise awareness about the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
Initiated by TikTok users and gaining traction across various social media platforms, the ‘Block Out 2024’ campaign places accountability on celebrities for their silence amidst the Gaza crisis. The post pointed that not just the BTS label should be blocked, but the personal accounts of the seven members – Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook should also be blocked and unfollowed.

Notably, a list circulating on Instagram identifies several high-profile figures, including BTS, as targets for the boycott. Alongside BTS, names like Selena Gomez, Justin and Hailey Bieber, Taylor Swift, Shakira, Harry Styles, Sydney Sweeney, and others have also been singled out. Bollywood celebrities like Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh and Shah Rukh Khan have also been named.
The inclusion of BTS in this list has sparked significant controversy, particularly among the K-pop fandom. While BTS has previously faced calls for boycotts due to their agency’s association with Scooter Braun, the CEO of HYBE America, and his statements on Palestine, fans were quick to rally in defense of the group. Many argued that BTS should not be held responsible for corporate matters, emphasizing that the members are currently fulfilling their mandatory military service obligations.
One fan emphasized, “Bts in military service and they support Palestine!!” Another echoed, “Bro are yall fr? They are in the military they can’t post about Palestinians plus they are against Israel just because they’re famous doesn’t mean you guys should block them educate yourself please”. Amidst calls for boycott, fans urge for accurate information and recognition of BTS’s circumstances, with one asserting, “Bts are doing their military service so they cant access to their phones the post on their official account is by the company Hybe entertainment so reconsider and delete their name”.
