Celebrating her 39th birthday on June 9, Sonam Kapoorthe esteemed actress and fashion trendsetter, takes a moment to contemplate her trajectory within the entertainment realm. Renowned for her distinctive style and influence in the fashion domain, Sonam has persistently strived to dispel the notion that she is much more than just a fashionista. Through candid conversations across time, she has shared her battles, aspirations, and eventual embrace of her multifaceted persona, embodying both a fashion luminary and a dedicated performer.
In a 2016 interview with The Quint, Sonam Kapoor opened up about her frustration with being stereotyped as merely a fashion diva.“I’ve been writing short stories, I have concepts for three scripts, and I hope to direct a film myself. I was fed up of being branded as a fashion diva who can’t act. Such prejudices did affect my self-pride,” she confessed.
Sonam’s desire to direct films and her involvement in writing scripts indicate her passion for storytelling and her aspiration to be recognized for her talents beyond the runway.

She further expressed the emotional toll these stereotypes took on her, revealing a period of depression. “During the last two years, I went through a troubled phase. I wanted to disown myself. But there’s light at the end of the depression. I’ve smartened up. I’m a homebody, I’m thoughtful, and I can be uber glamorous. As the Whitney Houston song goes, I’m every woman,” she shared.
Sonam has often faced criticism for her focus on fashion, even from her peers. In 2010, her ‘I Hate Luv Storys’ co-star Imran Khan suggested on ‘Koffee with Karan’ that she should do “more movies, less magazine covers.” Sonam’s response to Hindustan Times was sharp and assertive, emphasizing the intertwined nature of fashion and acting in the careers of many iconic stars. “Imran is really sweet and I like him, but I can’t take someone so wet behind the ears seriously. He still has a lot to do before he makes statements like that. Fashion and acting go hand in hand,” she retorted, citing examples of legendary figures like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe who excelled in both arenas.

In a 2023 interview with YS Life, Sonam reflected on her identity and the balance she has struck between being an actress and a fashion icon. When asked whether she prefers to be known as a style icon or a leading actor, Sonam eloquently expressed her contentment with both roles. “To be honest, I’m not sure I can choose between the two. I love fashion and I’m proud of the way I’ve been able to use my platform to promote Indian designers and craftsmanship. But I’m also passionate about my work as an actor, and I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to play complex and challenging roles,” she explained.

Sonam’s journey highlights the multifaceted nature of her career. She acknowledges that while her fashion sense is a significant part of her public persona, her dedication to acting is equally important. “If I had to pick one, I’d say I’d rather be known as a style icon who is also a leading actor. But really, I’m just Sonam Kapoor, and I’m happy to be known as just that,” she concluded.
