During the trailer launch event of Karan’s upcoming production ‘Kill’, the filmmaker talked about huge star fees and outrageous demands of actors and their entourage like makeup, hairdresser, stylists, and other crew members. While talking to Indianexpress.com Karan Johar said high star fees aren’t always “viable,” which makes it challenging to produce a movie.
The filmmaker said, “The entourage cost is the least of our worry. It’s the main remuneration of the actors that has to be looked into. It’s very critical for all the actors to understand exactly how the times are, how the climate of our movies are, how tough and difficult it is to maneuver through making a motion picture of any magnitude or size.
“It is very difficult, there are so many costs— the PnA (Publicity and advertising) costs and if the above the line cost, which is what comes from the actors, is not viable, then it becomes important to mount a film. Every single movie star today has to review what they’re asking for.”
He further stated that the actors can take all the entourage they want, that is not the problem but the real issue is the mothership cost. The filmmaker emphasized that the actors should look within because a lot of them are not really in touch with reality. As part of performance-based compensation, there can be backend deals, profit-sharing percentages, and box office slabs.
