Why the French capital is known as the City of Love

Well, I regret nothing because that was the day I saw haute couture in person for the first time. I couldn’t afford the air I was breathing in that store, but I stood in front of a Dior masterpiece, unable to tear myself away. That dress fed my soul.

Paris is a city that blurs boundaries. Where fashion is art and food is religion and art is a physical challenge. Where ideas surround you, creativity is everywhere and imagination makes anything possible.

I remember feeling so inspired as I walked the Paris streets, new dreams taking shape as I absorbed the city’s beauty. As I picture the world’s greatest athletes being immersed in that town, I realise they share an artist’s skill, and that is imagination.

The Olympic Games is built on dreams. No race is won, or even run, no record broken, without that athlete imagining themselves doing it first. Their belief that they can do it, even their willingness to try, starts with a dream.

It’s how every great painting, exquisite garment, spectacular pastry was formed. Not to mention the holidays we’ve taken in beautiful cities around the world. And the promises a young couple make to each other to build a life together. The kernel of all these things is in a dream.

We all need dreams. Something to hook our imaginations to – a private, sacred place, away from the realities of living. A reminder to our tender souls of the creative, brave and limitless versions of ourselves that exist inside us. It’s not even essential that we chase or make our dreams come true. It’s enough that they show us who we have the potential to become.

I have often thought of that Irish couple over the years. Are they still together? What lives have they led? Will they say to their kids as the marathon kicks off, “We got engaged not far from there”? And their kids will roll their eyes and say, “We know, with the intrusive Australian couple”?

It’s funny to remember our past selves. Am I living the dreams I had then? I did not imagine this life, so the answer is probably no. But I still hold many of the dreams of my young heart. No matter the year or where I am, I still dream of Paris.
